How To Keep Safe On The Roads

Whether you are a driver, a biker, a pedestrian, or a cyclist, staying safe on the road is important. There are both similar and different dangers for each different group of people who may be using the roads, and it’s important for us to know and understand each one. We all need to ensure we are considering to safety of ourselves and those around us when we are heading out onto the roads.

Driver Safety

If you want to stay safe on the road as a driver you first need to understand that you are in a motor vehicle, therefore, not only do you pose a threat to yourself and need to keep yourself safe, you also pose a threat to other users on the roads. If you want to help avoid unnecessary collisions, always make sure you: 

  • Wear your seatbelt 
  • Revise your hazard perception 
  • Keep up to date with any road safety changes or advice 
  • Drive with caution on the roads
  • Reduce your speed if it’s raining, snowing, or windy, or icy

  • Wearing a high visibility jacket or bright clothing when you are near a road, especially if it is dark, this helps you to be seen by other road users.

  • Where they are available, make sure you use zebra crossing, traffic lights, and other safe places, when crossing the roads. 

Motorbike Safety

Motorbikes are on the roads just as much as cars, however, they do carry a little more of a risk to the rider. To ensure you are safe on the road make sure: 

  • You’re careful on the bends, your speed needs to be appropriate to make sure you don’t lose control 
  • Any overtake where it is legally safe to do so, avoid junctions and driveway. 
  • Expect other vehicles to turn right without any warning signs.
  • Be precautious of vehicles pulling out from side roads and joining roundabouts, you need to be fully prepared to take action and stop. 

Cycle Safety

As a cyclist you may be more vulnerable than a pedestrian, this is because you are spending more time on the road alongside other vehicles. Make sure you: 

  • Make yourself seen by wearing high visibility or bright clothing. 
  • Have lights on the front and back of your bike. It’s illegal for you to ride in the dark without them. 
  • Wear a helmet
  • Make sure you are familiar with the highway code.
