Post Recovery Gift Ideas For Loved Ones Tackling Addiction

They say the first step in addiction treatment is admitting you have a problem. The second step would be actually seeking treatment. It is often times the hardest thing an addict will ever have to do. That is, until it is time to come home.

Leaving the facility that has been home and protected someone for months can be a rather traumatic experience. So much so that it could very well be the shove that pushes the person back into the arms of their vice. This could be one of the reasons why 40-60% of patients end up relapsing at some point. One of the best things you can do for your loved one is get them the right “Welcome Home” gift that will be sure to encourage them to remain on their substance-free path. Below are some examples of encouraging and thoughtful gifts for your loved one.

Journal or Diary

Daily journaling is something everyone should try at some point. It is very cathartic. Returning to normalcy after a stint in rehab can often bring an enormous amount emotions flying at your loved one. One way to calm down and decompress from the everyday struggle is for them to write about how they conquered their demons that day. If there is anything an addict will learn, it’s to live day by day. One day at a time. It only compounds that message when they can write in detail how they successfully made it through the day. It will also give them something to look back on during the harder days.

Spa Day

This might not be for everyone, but a lot of people love to be pampered. Relaxation is a key to success in recovery and where else can you get more relaxed than at a spa? It could even be something you guys start to do on a steady basis. Maybe you decide you’ll make it a monthly thing. It’s important to have a set schedule and proper structure in your loved ones life when they return home. This would be something that could be viewed as a reward for their hard work too.

New Clothes

New you, new clothes! It might not seem like it would be that impactful, but have you ever gotten some new clothes and thought “..man I feel good!”. I know you have. A few new outfits can go a long way for someone who might not be feeling at the top of their game. Want to take it a step further? How about getting them some clothes that will show just how hard they have been working? There are different recovery brands that make clothes specifically for those fighting for their lives.

Books

There are so many recovery books available right now, I can’t even give you recommendations. Do your own homework and read some reviews. It can be self-help books or just a really good book. You’d be surprised (maybe) to see how relaxing and soothing it can be to get lost in a book. Often times, people will fall into their book so far that the problems they are facing begin to melt away. Books can help to create the calming atmosphere that can be critical to prolonged success.

I’m sure if you sit down and think about your loved one, specifically, you’ll be able to find the perfect gift to not only show them that you care, but also that you’ll be there for them on their road to recovery. Good luck to you and your loved one!
