Choosing the Right Martial Art for You

Martial arts are becoming more and more popular as a form of exercise these days. They are a lot more interesting that standard exercise and can give you a full body workout. The problem is that there are so many different ones out there it can sometimes be hard to decide which one to take up. For a beginner, it can be daunting as you don’t know the various benefits of each one. Here are a few tips on choosing the right martial art for you.

Muay Thai/Kickboxing

Kickboxing is used to describe a lot of different martial arts these days but the term was originally used to describe Muay Thai. It originated in Thailand but is now widespread. The different techniques are learned by practicing combos on punch pads called Thai Pads. Once you are a bit more experienced you can move onto sparring and a standing form of grappling called clinching. It can be quite intensive on your hips and shoulders but it is worth it.

If you are considering trying to pursue martial arts in a professional capacity then this is a good option as a lot of MMA fighters use it as the basis for their style.

Wing Chun Kung Fu

Wing Chun Kung Fu is a close quarters fighting style that originated in China. Alongside the fighting aspects, there is also a lot of relaxation techniques involved that can be good for general health of the body and mind. A lot of the training is based around the center line in your body, and balancing yourself around it. Most of the attacks are fast paced and based around moving forward. The stance that is used is quite unusual so you might ache after the first few sessions.

It is very fast paced so if you are looking for something a bit more relaxed then this may not be for you. It does not involve as many kicks so doesn’t give you a full body workout like other martial arts might.

Taekwondo

Taekwondo is one of the broadest styles of martial arts, that started in Korea. It is probably the most popular martial art and features in the Olympics. Most of the training is drill based and includes punches, kicks and throws. As you progress, you will earn the different Taekwondo belt colors to signify the different moves you can do.

It is difficult to know if this is the right martial art for you because it is such a varied sport. It is best to speak to your local gym about exactly what their program offers and then decide from there.

Krav Maga

Krav Maga is a form of martial arts that was invented by the Israeli Army, it is the most practical form of martial arts. It translates literally as ‘battle contact’. A lot of it is based on real-life situations like disarming attackers, using rubber knives and guns. If you are looking for a martial art for purely self defence purposes then this is definitely the one for you.

Hopefully this will make choosing a martial art a bit easier for you.
