College Football Playoff To Help With Travel Expenses For Families

After pressure from Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, the NCAA granted a waiver that will allow the College Football Playoff to assist families of student athletes participating in the Jan. 12 College Football Playoff National Championship Presented By AT&T.

They will be able to provide up to $3,000 in travel expenses for each student-athletes family but are capping this year’s reimbursement at $1,250 per parent or guardian. The maximum number of members eligible for the reimbursement is either two parents or two guardians and will cover travel, lodging and food for their trip.

This plan will work in conjuction with a similar plan the NCAA has laid out for families trying to travel to the NCAA basketball Final Four in the spring.

Per ESPN

“We know how expensive travel can be, so we’re pleased to provide assistance to parents or guardians who want to see their sons play in the first College Football Playoff National Championship,” Bill Hancock, executive director of the CFP, said in a statement. “It will make the game even more special for the student-athletes to know that their family members are receiving this benefit.”

The NCAA has also said that schools will be allowed to institute plans to help families who wish to travel to other championship games as well.
