Meet Former European Tour Golfer Of The Month, Danny Willett

Danny Willett is an English golfer who has achieved victories on the European Tour, Challenge Tour and Sunshine Tour and finished in 6th place at the 2015 Open Championship. Danny Willett is available for booking as an after dinner speaker at private or corporate events or for brand endorsements through celebrity talent agency MN2S.

Forging a successful career early on at amateur level, Willett won the English Amateur Championship in 2007 and competed in the 2007 Walker Cup, becoming the number one rated amateur in the world in 2008. Looking to develop his golf career as a young man, he spent two years at Jacksonville State University in the USA, garnering the award of 2006 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and won medallist honours at the 2007 OVC Championship.

After a run of success at amateur level, Danny Willett decided to turn professional in May 2008, and earned his European Tour card for the 2009 season through qualifying school. Willett enjoyed a successful 2009 season, with eight top ten finishes and finished 58th in the race to Dubai, starting strongly at the 2010 BMW PGA Championship, he took the lead after the first round, but eventually finished in 5th place, and consequently broke into the top 100 on the Official World Golf Ranking and placed 23rd on the Order of Merit.

Willett’s first European Tour victory came in June 2012 at the BMW International Open in Cologne, which he followed up with his second tournament victory at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in 2014, and his impressive third place finish at the 2015 WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship earned him temporary PGA Tour membership for the 2015 season. Rightfully warded the honour of playing on the prestigious PGA Tour, Willett justified his invitation by a strong performance at the 2015 Open, where he was one shot off the lead in the first round, until a disappointing third round score saw him drop down the leader board, although he finished well in the final round, climbing back up the standings to achieve 6th place.

Willett has come a long way from humble beginnings playing golf amongst sheep. He spoke before his US Masters debut in 2015 of how he and friends would go to Anglesey to play a par 3 amidst a field of sheep – certainly he has come a long way since then, participating in the major tournaments around the world.

Aside from playing professional golf, Willett runs the golfing charity, Wee Willetts, giving children between the ages of 5 and 12 a chance to progress from junior golf to gain experience playing on real golf courses.

In July this year, Danny Willett was named as European Tour golfer of the month, following his third tournament win on the tour at the Omega European Masters. Not only performing well on the European Tour, his 6th place finish at the Open Championship this year and his top finishes inside the top 50 at all the other majors – the US Open, the Masters and the PGA Championship – mark him out as an assured player ready to tackle the top players for more high ranking finishes.

Danny Willet is a golfer who has made waves on the scene in 2015, making a big impression on both the European Tour and the PGA Tour, and will surely look forward to more successes in the coming years.
