Ohio State Determined The Starter For Their First Drill By Coin Flip

It’s no secret that Ohio State is stacked at the quarterback position. What is a secret is who will be starting come September 7 when the Buckeyes take on the only team to beat them last year, Virginia Tech.

To show that no favorites are being played at the beginning of camp, quarterbacks coach Tim Beck opted to have J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones flip a coin to see who would be the first to lead the first team during drills.

“I think more or less it’s giving the guys the opportunity to really compete.” Beck said. “We’re going to need every day, and there’s probably going to be a time during the course of the season we’re going to need both of them. To just settle on one and say, ‘Here’s the keys,’ and the other guy sits back and becomes the second-team guy, I don’t know if that’s the right thing to do.”
Cardale called heads. Cardale won. That makes him 4-0 as a starter at OSU.
From there, Beck will alternate between Barrett and Jones until a true starter emerges, which is exactly how Jones would prefer it to be.
“I would prefer not to flip a coin to see who goes first next time,” Jones said. “I’ll let coach Beck know that. It should go back and forth. What if I win the coin flip every time?”
Judging by everything else he has done at OSU, you’d have to think there is a strong chance that he would win every coin flip, right?
