Rex Ryan Should Have to Put Money Where His Mouth Is

Stupid me for thinking that I had seen the last of New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan for this season.  After weeks of endless press conferences with him making bold predictions and claiming the Jets were the favorite to win the Super Bowl, I thought he was gone at least until training camp.  Well Sexy Rexy got himself into a pickle with his actions this weekend at a MMA event in Sunrise, Florida.  While doing an interview with Showtime, he let all the Dolphins fans in attendance know his intentions for next year.

“I just want to tell everyone in Miami that we’re coming to beat you twice next year.”

Rex didn’t exactly make any friends with that statement that afterwards brought on a thunderous amount of boo’s.  After the event concluded and fans were on their way out, Ryan let the Dolphins fans know there were no hard feelings.  Although he did it in a rather unorthadoxed manner.  He used his middle finger.  Hmm, havent we seen this before?  Michael Vick, Bud Adams we are looking at you.  When Adams thought it was a good idea to flip the bird to Bills fans in November it costed him $250,000.  Rex Ryan was obviously quick to issue an apology to the organization, NFL and it’s fans.

“It was stupid and inappropriate,” Ryan said. “I wouldn’t accept that type of behavior from one of the coaches or players, and it’s unacceptable from me. I apologize to the Jets’ organization, the National Football League and NFL fans everywhere.”

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum has already said that what Ryan did was in poor judgment but in the same breath they have accepted his apology.  So it will be up to the NFL to impose a fine because it looks like the Jets are trying to sweep this under the rug right away.  Dolphin fan David Hildenbrand was the person who snapped the photo of Ryan in the wrong.  He said that he was walking by and his friends were yelling at Ryan because of his earlier comments.

“Ryan was walking by us after the event and a couple buddies of mine said some things like, ‘Dolphins rule, Jets suck.’”. “[Ryan] looked at us and said, ‘Go f— yourselves,’ and then he gave us the finger.”

Anyone that is reading this would probably do the exact same thing in the same situation.  In fact, I’m almost positive that I would say that word for word.  Unfortunately for Rex Ryan he is a head coach and not a blogger so there may be a penalty involved.  In my opinion, if the NFL does not act on this there will be an outrage.  He interacted with fans in a negative way.  Not unlike what Bud Adams did and what Michael Vick did (although they were Falcons fans) and these two had to pay the price.  They set a precedence, albeit a very high one, with Bud Adams and now they are going to have to enforce it.  Sorry Rex but I think you’re about to have to put your money where your mouth is.
