Matthew Dellavedova Gets Standing Ovation From Cavs Fans Upon Return to Cleveland

Matthew Dellavedova had a bit of a whirlwind weekend. Friday night ahead of the Cavaliers game against the Sacramento Kings, it was announced that the Aussie point guard would be heading back to Cleveland in a three-team trade between the Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Wizards.

Dellavedova was a fan favorite on the 2016 Cavaliers championship team and was known for his gritty play as he would sacrifice his body on multiple occasions for a loose ball. He defense was also tenacious and the combination of both would easily frustrate the competition.

Delly joined the team on Saturday night but did not dress. The team played a welcome home tribute for him and the crowd gave him a rousing standing ovation.

Delly’s first game could be on Monday night when the Cavaliers travel to…Milwaukee. Awwwwkward.

The Trade

In all, 5 players were involved in the trade and it was basically a move for the Bucks to clear cap space.

Cleveland Gets:

PG Matthew Dellavedova (Bucks)
C John Henson (Bucks)
Bucks 2021 1st round pick
Bucks 2021 2nd round pick
Wizards 2022 2nd round pick

Milwaukee Gets:

PG George Hill (Cavs)
F Jason Smith (Wizards)
Wizards 2021 2nd round pick

Washington Gets:

F Sam Dekker (Cavs)
Cavs 2021 2nd round pick

The first round pick from Milwaukee has lottery protections, so 2021 may not be the year that the Cavaliers get the 1st rounder they acquired. Perhaps the following year, but it could be as late as 2024. The Cavaliers have been moving veterans this year in order to stock draft picks for rebuilding. With these picks, the Cavaliers have now acquired four future picks since November 29.
