Miguel Cabrera arrested on drunken driving charges in Florida

miguel-cabreraDetroit Tigers firstbasemen Miguel Cabrera was arrested on DUI charges Wednesday in Florida.  According to the St. Lucie County Sheriffs Office, Miggy’s engine was smoking along the side of the road when the deputy spotted the car.  Upon making contact with Cabrera, the officier observed him to have a strong odor of alcohol and slurred speech.  It also did not help his cause when he took a nip from the bottle of scotch right in front of the officier.  If that wasn’t enough, he had but one question for the arresting officier.

“Do you know who I am, you don’t know anything about my problems”

Miguel Cabrera fell off the wagon back in 2009 when, at the end of the season before a huge series, wound up in the clinker after a little domestic/drunken dispute.  Miggy had pulled himself together for the 2010 season when he showed up to camp in great shape.  He continued tearing apart the AL throughout the season and a lot of people had him on the radar for AL MVP.

More details have come out from the TC Palm newspaper regarding the incidents surrounding the arrest.

A deputy reported Cabrera was put in handcuffs after not following orders. Cabrera also “kept running out in the road with his hands up.

A deputy asked Cabrera to get his a patrol vehicle, and he said, “(Expletive) you.”

Miguel Cabrera pushed off a vehicle into a deputy, who “delivered 3-4 knee spikes” into Cabrera’s left thigh.

My take on the situation is this.  Migs is a big boy.  He obviously has had his shit under control and this was just a little slip up.  I do not condone drunk driving at all and I think he should be punished, which he will.  I honestly think that Cabrera has no interest in that kind of lifestyle and this was just a night he got caught having a little too much fun.  We have all had it happen before.  Trust me.  Also, to quote Iron Mike from the Hangover, we all do dumb shit when we’re f*cked up.  The point I’m trying to get to is that Miguel saw what he did last year when he got serious and that alone is what is keeping him on track.  He was having a little fun before the season begins and he has to get serious.  He knows that, the Tigers know that and now you know that.

I do have one question though.  From what I am reading, the officer never actually saw Miguel driving the car but rather pulled up to him on the side of the road while his car was having trouble.  Don’t you have to been driving or be seen driving a vehicle to get a DUI?  Basically, all Miguel would have to say is that his car broke down and he was waiting for help.  Since his car wouldn’t move, he figured he would knock back a little taste while waiting for help to arrive.  The whole thing seems a litte weird to me and I wouldn’t be surprised if today was the last we hear of it.
