John Oliver, host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight loves going on scathing rants about mundane topics. He has taken on the NCAA, big tobacco and even Daylight Savings Time. This week, he set his crosshairs on the “holiday” April Fools’ Day.
Oliver argues that if you like April Fools’ Day you are actually a sociopath. He may not be wrong, either.
“April Fools’ Day is to comedy as St. Patrick’s Day is to Irish culture.”
If you would like to take the No-Prank Pledge, here it is in its entirety.
“I solemnly swear that on this April Fools’ Day, I will not post a fake engagement photo on Facebook like some kind of asshole. Nor will I perpetuate a celebrity death hoax. Because that makes people sad. In fact, I will not play any impractical jokes. And if I see someone planning a prank, I will tell them ‘Hey, you’re being a dick right now. Stop being a dick.'”
