Long distance relationships are something that has worked for some people, and not for others, since the dawn of the human race. It’s just like with a normal relationship with someone who lives down the street from you, you’re never going to be able to tell how the relationship is going to work out. You’re either going to prosper and find the person you marry, or it’s one day going to end in tears. But we know that long distance relationships bring their own unique set of problems. You have to think about a deeper trust because the person could be the other side of the world to you. You need to think about deeper communication. There’s so many things to think about, but are they better or worse in the modern world? Let’s explore!
Communication Is Key
Communication definitely is key when it comes to solving any relationship, but making a long distance relationship work completely relies on it. Some would say that communication is far easier now. Back in the day long distance love birds would have spent days or weeks waiting for one letter full of updates and love, and maybe in a few months time they’d be able to meet. But now we have social media and mobile phones. Some would call them a blessing, some would call them a curse. There’s no added pressure of social media and the worry of cheating. Cheating has become so prevalent since social media got so big. But it also gives couples an excellent way of keeping in touch. That’s where trust comes into communication. There needs to be such a high level of trust for a long distance relationship to work.
You also need to make sure that you’re thinking of new things to communicate about. Make sure that the conversations are not just based around ‘how has your day been’. They need to be deep and meaningful!
Making The Jump
The next thing you need to think about is making a jump to the next step. You can’t just have a relationship forever, one day one of you is going to have to move. If one of you is moving to the UK, you can acquire a UK spouse visa so that you can live comfortably. The same goes for any country that you might want to try and live in. There is always going to be some sort of entry requirement and visa needed, even just for a short length of time in some countries such as Dubai. Always make sure you’re making the jump when it’s the right time for your relationship!
Battling The Struggles
Finally, you need to make sure you’re finding ways to battle through the struggles. Just like any relationship you will no doubt have the periods of time where you’re arguing more than usual, or finding it hard to communicate like normal. In these instances it would be great if you could find a new balance. Find something new to bring a spark back!
